Band News
 James
Byrne was the leading exponent of the fiddle style of the area of Glencolmcille,
Co Donegal. He was born in 1946 during the period when visiting houses,
playing music and dancing were the main social outlets in the area.
His father, John, and many neighbours played the fiddle. He grew
up surrounded by the music and absorbed the tunes and the lore attached
to them. He had an unequalled store and knowledge of the music of his local
area. To hear him play was a great experience for lovers of fiddle music.
James' style of playing, tone and command of the instrument was exceptional.
The continuance of the family tradition of fiddle playing looks
set to continue as he has passed on the music to his family and many other
fiddlers have also benefited from James' teaching of music and the lore
associated with it. He taught local children and had fiddle students who
travelled from near and far and most of today's leading Donegal style fiddle
players will gratefully acknowledge James Byrne's important role in their
musical development.
Until now the name of John “Mhosai” McGinley was always quoted as
the most illustrious name in Glencolmcille's fidding history, James Byrne's
will now be quoted alongside his.
Some of James' music is available on the CD's
The Brass Fiddle - Claddagh - (CC44CD) - Compilation
The Road to Glenlough - Claddagh - (CC52CD) - solo (with guests)
