CONNIE HAUGHEY (Connie Con Beag)
(8th December 1906 - 6th January 1999)
Christy Byrne & Connie Haughey
Connie, or Connie Con Beag as he was
better known, is remembered as one of the finest fiddlers of his generation
in Teileann. He was born and reared in the townland of Rann
na Cille where he made his living as a fisherman. Connie settled
in the home house and reared a large family with his wife, Cathy. As
a young man he played as part of a group with Mick
McShane, Mickey
Golly and Jimmy Lyons. Connie is
remembered as a very good dance player and often played at house dances
and at céilithe in the Irish
College along with fellow Teileann fiddler, Jim
Phat James.
Unfortunately, he had to cease playing at a relatively young age due
to a hand complaint. To our knowledge there are no recordings of Connie's
music.
